Back to School: Essential Road Safety Tips for Parents and Kids

September 12, 2024/in Blog/by Goodbye Graffiti

As we kick off the school year, we see the return of the morning rush! We can expect a surge of traffic around schools and the surrounding neighbourhoods. While it is an incredibly exciting time for students and parents, it is also a great time to remind ourselves of the importance of road safety. It is all of our responsibility to ensure safe roadways!

1. Talk to Your Kids About Road Safety
The foundation of road safety starts with education. Parents should have open discussions with their children about the importance of being alert and cautious when near roadways. Teach kids to always look left, right, and left again before crossing the street. Emphasize the importance of using crosswalks and obeying traffic signals. Remind children not to use their phones, wear headphones, or engage in other distractions while walking near roads. If sidewalks are available, children should always use them. If not, they should walk on the side of the road facing traffic.

2. Safe Driving Practices Near Schools
Drivers play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of children on the road. It is important for drivers to be aware of school zones as they often have reduced speed limits. Be sure to adhere to these limits, especially during school hours. It is important to never pass a school bus when it’s stopped to load or unload children. This is a special reminder for patience; a few extra minutes could prevent a serious accident!

3. Walking and Biking to School
Walking or biking to school can be a healthy and fun way for kids to get to school, but it also requires extra caution! If possible, children should walk or bike to school with a friend or group. There’s safety in numbers, and it makes the journey more enjoyable. Plan and practice a safe route to school with your child. Identify safe places to cross the street and avoid dangerous areas.

For kids biking to school, wearing a helmet is a must. Make sure the helmet fits properly and is securely fastened.

4. Setting a Good Example
Children often mimic the behaviours they observe. Parents and guardians can set a good example by practicing safe road habits themselves. Whether it’s obeying traffic signals, crossing at crosswalks, or avoiding distractions while driving, modelling good behaviour is one of the most effective ways to teach children about road safety.

As kids head back to school, road safety should be a top priority for everyone. By educating children, driving cautiously, and working together as a community, we can help ensure that every child arrives at school and back home safely. Let’s make this school year a safe and successful one!
